Into the Golden Heart: Fairbanks Beckons
Welcome, everyone, to the very first installment of our blog on the Princess Alaskan Cruisetour! We are absolutely buzzing with excitement to share this incredible adventure with you, Mark your calendars: June 28, 2026 is when this all kicks off! And where better to begin our epic journey than in the beating heart of the interior: Fairbanks, Alaska!
They call it the ‘Golden Heart City,’ and for good reason. Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska, but its story is colossal, deeply rooted in the frenzy and fortune of the Klondike Gold Rush.
The Spark of Gold
Imagine this, it was 1902 when an Italian immigrant named Felix Pedro struck it rich, discovering gold in the vast Tanana Valley. That single discovery acted like a magnet, drawing a massive influx of prospectors and quickly giving birth to a trading post right along the Chena River. That trading post became the city we’re discussing today.
The city was christened after Charles W. Fairbanks, a prominent U.S. Senator from Indiana who later served as Vice President under Theodore Roosevelt. For decades, gold remained the mighty engine of this place, transforming Fairbanks into a bustling supply center for the entire Alaskan interior.
Today, though, Fairbanks is known for so much more. It’s famous for its stunning natural beauty, the mesmerizing Northern Lights in winter, and a unique spirit that blends rugged frontier grit with modern comforts. And here’s the kicker for summer travelers like us: it boasts nearly 24 hours of daylight! That’s right—the Midnight Sun is our guide!

A few of our favorite options:
-
Gold Dredge 8 Tour: If you want the most hands-on Gold Rush experience, this is it. This dredge is a National Historic Monument, a giant, floating factory that chewed up and processed millions of ounces of gold from the frozen earth. You get to ride a replica of the Tanana Valley Railroad right to the machine, learn about the incredible engineering, and best of all, you get to pan for gold yourself! They guarantee you’ll find some, and you get to keep every flake!

-
Trans-Alaska Pipeline: An engineering marvel of a different kind—the 800-mile-long Trans Alaska Pipeline System(TAPS), stretching all the way from Prudhoe Bay to the ice-free port of Valdez. A truly monumental undertaking.
-
Unique Local Stops: For culture and history buffs, you have the magnificent Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, which showcases the heritage of the automobile during the Gold Rush; Pioneer Park, a 44-acre theme park dedicated to Alaska’s history; and the rich lessons on Native Cultures.
